Welcome to the Early Years
Our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides a nurturing and stimulating environment where Nursery and Reception children learn and grow together. Our vertically grouped class supports personalised learning opportunities that cater to the unique needs of each child, fostering independence, curiosity, and a love of learning.

What Makes Our EYFS Unique?
Mixed-Age Learning: Nursery and Reception children share one classroom, benefiting from peer learning and collaboration.
Small Class Sizes: With a focus on individual care, children receive attention that supports their personal, social, and academic development.
Christian Values: Our teaching is rooted in our Christian ethos, encouraging respect, kindness, and a strong sense of community.
Our Curriculum
At St. John's, our EYFS curriculum is thoughtfully designed to support mixed-age learning while meeting the unique needs of Nursery and Reception children. Formal teaching times are tailored separately for each age group to ensure developmentally appropriate learning experiences. If it is deemed beneficial for a child, adults may arrange for them to join the teaching session of the other group, providing flexibility and targeted support to meet individual needs.
Our termly themes provide a dynamic framework for learning, integrating:
Play-Based Learning: Engaging activities that nurture language, physical development, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Rich Oracy Opportunities: Supporting children in sharing ideas, building confidence, and developing communication skills.
Outdoor Learning: Inspiring exploration and hands-on discovery using our natural environment.
The Areas of Development in the Statutory Framework provide a clear structure for understanding how children grow and learn during their early years. They highlight key aspects of a child’s development, from communication and physical skills to literacy and mathematics. For parents, these areas serve as a helpful guide to track progress, identify strengths, and understand how play and exploration support learning. By understanding these areas, parents can better support their child's growth at home and recognize how the activities at school contribute to their overall development.
