Science

Science at St. John’s aims to provide pupils with the opportunity to explore and understand the natural world through observation, investigation, and experimentation. It plays a vital role in developing critical thinking skills, fostering curiosity, and nurturing a deep appreciation for the wonders of the universe from a very early age.

Science topics are timetabled across the classes to ensure that all children receive a full coverage of the National Curriculum and that they have a balance of individual learning and practical activities. Every year, children in Year 5 have the opportunity to take part in a science competition involving numerous schools in the borough. This not only challenges their scientific knowledge but also encourages teamwork and collaboration. Additionally, all students engage in local fieldwork trips to Hilly Fields and Forty Hall, where they apply their classroom learning to real-life settings. These trips not only enhance their understanding of scientific concepts but also foster a sense of environmental awareness and appreciation for the local ecosystem.
