At St John's, the study of French opens a window into language, culture, and global citizenship. Across Key Stage 2, children in Diamond and Emerald classes enjoy a dedicated hour of French each week, where learning is delivered in engaging, small chunks that build confidence and curiosity.

Our curriculum is designed to develop core language skills through a blend of spoken practice, written tasks, songs, games, and video-based learning. Pupils explore everyday topics such as greetings, food, family, and hobbies, gradually building the vocabulary and sentence structures needed to express themselves in French. Cultural themes are woven throughout, from celebrating La Chandeleur and Mardi Gras to discovering how Easter and Christmas are marked in French-speaking countries.
Through interactive activities and scaffolded progression, children learn to listen attentively, speak with increasing fluency, and write short phrases and paragraphs. Lessons are designed to be inclusive and accessible, with visual prompts, role-play, and storytelling supporting all learners. Find some of our interactive games here.
By experiencing French as both a language and a cultural journey, pupils at St John's develop communication skills, cultural awareness, and a sense of connection to the wider world. Our approach empowers children to become confident language learners and respectful global citizens, ready to embrace diversity and new experiences.
