Science at St. John’s aims to provide pupils with the opportunity to explore and understand the natural world through observation, investigation, and experimentation. It plays a vital role in developing critical thinking skills, fostering curiosity, and nurturing a deep appreciation for the wonders of the universe from a very early age.
Children in Ruby Class learn scientific knowledge and skills through the strand of ‘Understanding the World’. Our continuous provision in Ruby Class, allows children to have the opportunity to learn through open-ended exploratory play in both our indoor and outdoor environments.
Beginning in Sapphire Class, Science lessons are timetabled weekly to ensure that all children receive full coverage of the National Curriculum and that they have a balance of individual learning and practical activities. Through first-hand experiences, children gain the confidence to work scientifically. Across six topics each year, children also develop and embed their scientific knowledge, which is then built upon every year. Find our knowledge organisers here.
Every year, children in Year 5 have the opportunity to take part in a STEM scienc competition as part of our engagement with the Enfield Town Schools Partnership (ETSP). This not only challenges their scientific knowledge but also encourages teamwork and collaboration. Additionally, all students engage in local fieldwork trips to Hilly Fields and Forty Hall, where they apply their classroom learning to real-life settings. These trips not only enhance their understanding of scientific concepts but also foster a sense of environmental awareness and appreciation for the local ecosystem.
