Transition to Year 1

Moving into Year 1 represents a meaningful step in children’s learning, as they begin to experience a more formal teaching style and increased expectations. At St John’s, we prepare children for this shift gradually and thoughtfully, ensuring they feel confident, supported and ready for the new challenge. Because our Year 1 and Year 2 pupils learn together in a mixed‑age class, our transition begins early, giving children the time they need to adjust at a comfortable pace.

During the summer term, Reception children start to build the skills that will help them thrive in a more structured learning environment. We gently extend their independence, stamina and focus beyond the Early Years curriculum so that the change in approach feels manageable rather than sudden. Our high expectations are paired with a nurturing, responsive ethos, helping children grow while knowing they are cared for.

A key part of this preparation is our three‑week transition period in the second half of the summer term. Each morning, Reception children join their new Year 1 classroom and teachers, learning routines, experiencing whole‑class teaching, and becoming familiar with how learning is organised. These sessions help children build confidence in the more “Year 1‑style” structure, while also giving teachers time to observe, assess and organise learning groups ahead of September.

In the afternoons, children return to Ruby Class. This provides the ideal balance: a chance to embrace their new environment while still enjoying the reassurance of the familiar. By the start of the new school year, they have already built relationships, know the routines, and feel at home in their new class.

Parents remain closely involved throughout the process. We offer meetings, updates and opportunities for conversation so families understand how their child is settling and can feel confident in the journey ahead.

Above all, we want every child to feel loved, safe and secure as they move into Year 1. Transition should never feel overwhelming or unknown; it should feel purposeful, well supported and full of opportunity. By September, our children step into Year 1 with confidence—ready for the increased challenge, and excited for the learning that awaits.
