The Great ETSP Debate

We are extremely proud of our pupils who recently represented the school in the ETSP debating competition held at St Paul’s, where they competed against three other schools. Two debating teams took part, demonstrating confidence, commitment and impressive critical-thinking skills throughout the event.

In the lead-up to the competition, Year 5 and 6 pupils worked exceptionally hard, researching their topics thoroughly both at home and in school. The debates focused on two challenging and thought-provoking motions: animal testing and alternative transport routes to school. Pupils gathered facts, statistics and key arguments, learning how to structure their points clearly and respond effectively under pressure.

A key strength of our teams was their preparation. Each team practised debating their motion, taking turns to act as the opposition. This ensured that everyone was confident in their understanding of the topics and ready to respond to counterarguments on the day. Their ability to listen carefully, think on their feet and adapt their responses was truly commendable.

On the day of the competition, our teams spoke with clarity and confidence, presenting well‑researched arguments and engaging respectfully with opposing viewpoints. They represented the school superbly, showing excellent teamwork, resilience and maturity throughout the debates.

Although the teams did not progress to the final round, they performed incredibly well and gained valuable experience competing at a high level. Their effort, preparation and positive attitude made staff and families extremely proud.

Well done to all the pupils involved for their hard work and dedication. This was a fantastic achievement and a wonderful opportunity to develop skills that will benefit them well beyond the debating chamber.
