For young children, school is a big new world. In Ruby Class, our role is to make that world feel safe, welcoming and full of possibility. Wellbeing is at the heart of our practice: we prioritise emotional security, positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging. When children feel seen, valued and supported, they grow in confidence, form friendships and develop a love of learning that lasts.
Strong, trusting relationships are the foundation of our practice. Every child is known and cared for by familiar adults, and our warm, family-like atmosphere helps children to feel confident and secure. Our visual timetable supports children to understand the flow of the day, giving them comfort and ownership of their routine.
Each morning begins with familiar welcome songs and activities that help children settle, connect and prepare for learning. Children know there are spaces like our Rainbow Room and Reflection Area available for quiet time or small group reflection, so they always feel supported to regulate their emotions.
Wellbeing also means looking after our bodies. Children enjoy a rolling snack table, where they help to prepare and share healthy food, as well as daily access to outdoor play. Lunchtimes are calm, social occasions with staff modelling conversation, good manners and independence. Weekly PE, daily movement and music sessions add to the balance of physical and creative development.
Friendships are celebrated and nurtured from the start. Through play, circle times and storytelling, children learn to share, take turns and talk about their feelings. Our Christian values are woven through daily life, helping children to grow in kindness, respect and resilience.
Ruby Class is part of the whole St John’s community. We take part in worship, celebrations and whole-school events, giving children the sense that they truly belong. Achievements are noticed and celebrated, and every child is encouraged to shine in their own unique way.
