SEN Support and EHCPs

At St John’s, we believe every child deserves the right support to thrive. When a child requires additional help to make progress, we work closely with families to identify the most effective next steps.

If your child is accessing two or more targeted interventions or receiving additional support beyond the classroom to help them make progress, they will be identified as receiving SEN Support.

Children receiving SEN Support have two key documents that outline their needs and the strategies in place to help them succeed:

  • Individual Education Plan (IEP): details your child’s specific learning targets and the provision to meet them.

  • Termly Review: evaluates progress and adapts support where needed.

If a child receiving SEN Support continues to make limited progress, or if they have more complex needs that significantly impact their daily life in school, we may decide together that the next step is to apply for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

An EHCP provides a more formal, long-term plan that identifies a child’s specific needs and the provision required to meet them. Applications can be made by either parents or the SENDCo, and both submit the same information. Sometimes, an EHCP may also be discussed in preparation for a transition to a new setting, ensuring your child’s needs are fully understood and supported.
