Music is a universal language that inspires creativity, emotion and connection. It allows children to express themselves, work together and experience the joy of creating something meaningful. At St John’s, we believe music nurtures both heart and mind, offering every pupil the chance to explore imagination, emotion and intellect through sound.
From the very start of school life, children are encouraged to listen carefully, respond thoughtfully and join in with enthusiasm. Our music curriculum develops knowledge, skill and confidence while helping pupils grow in collaboration and belonging. Whether they are singing with friends, composing their own melodies or learning to play instruments, children discover how music can bring people together and celebrate diversity.
Music enriches our school community. It fills our assemblies, church services and celebrations, helping pupils form shared memories and a strong sense of unity. Regular performance opportunities allow children to share their talents, support one another and feel proud of what they achieve.
At St John’s, we aim to build a lifelong love of music that inspires creativity, strengthens confidence and opens the door to new possibilities.
All pupils are invited to explore instrumental learning. Free weekly tuition is available for recorder and keyboard, and children may also apply to learn woodwind, piano, violin, or other instruments through Enfield Music Service. Paid weekly lessons include the chance to take music exams and join borough-wide orchestras. Children can also take part in RockSteady, an amazing opportunity for children to learn what it takes to be in a band!

Our school choir, open to pupils from Year 2 upwards, meets every Wednesday from 3–4pm under the guidance of our specialist music teacher. The choir performs in all three school concerts and six church services across the year, celebrating music as a shared experience and a joyful form of worship.
