Design and Technology at St John’s is all about turning ideas into reality. Children are encouraged to think creatively and practically, using design to solve problems and to meet real needs. They learn to plan, test, adapt and evaluate their work, developing the resilience to keep improving until they achieve a purposeful outcome.
Our curriculum is carefully adapted for our mixed-age classes and follows a spiral structure, so that key knowledge and skills are revisited and extended each year. From cooking nutritious meals to building structures, experimenting with mechanisms or exploring electrical systems, pupils gain hands-on experience that connects directly to the world around them.
D&T is a subject where collaboration matters. Children learn to share ideas, listen to feedback and work as part of a team to design and build. Whole-school projects showcase this spirit of cooperation and innovation, giving children the chance to see how their contributions form part of something bigger.
We also encourage children to take pride in their achievements by celebrating inventive projects in school and entering design challenges beyond the classroom. By the time they leave St John’s, pupils will have developed practical skills, problem-solving strategies and the confidence to see themselves as designers, ready to apply their creativity to the challenges of the future.
