Art and Design at St John’s is a vital part of our curriculum, giving children the freedom to explore, create and express themselves in ways that are unique to them. We believe that high-quality art education is not only about developing technical skills, but also about nurturing imagination, individuality, mental wellbeing and a lifelong appreciation of creativity.
Our curriculum is carefully designed and adapted to meet the needs of our mixed-age school. Lessons provide opportunities for children to experiment with different techniques, materials and media while learning about a diverse range of artists, craftspeople and designers. It follows a spiral approach, where key skills are revisited and built upon each year, allowing children to strengthen their abilities and deepen their understanding over time. In this way, they grow in both skill and confidence, developing a strong sense of themselves as artists in their own right.
Art at St John’s is also about connection – with ourselves, with each other, and with the wider world. Alongside individual projects, we showcase collaborative work created across different year groups, celebrating creativity as a shared experience and strengthening our sense of community.
We also celebrate creativity beyond the classroom, with school-wide competitions and opportunities to enter regional and national contests, giving children the chance to shine and share their work with a wider audience.
By the time children leave St John’s, they will have experienced a broad, balanced and inspiring Art and Design curriculum, gaining not only practical skills but also a deeper sense of self, resilience and creative expression.
