PSHE and RSE at St John’s help children understand themselves, form positive relationships and develop as confident, responsible members of society. Our curriculum follows the DfE-approved Jigsaw programme, ensuring that lessons are age-appropriate, inclusive and meet statutory requirements under Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).
Weekly PSHE lessons give pupils dedicated time for reflection and discussion, helping them to recognise and manage their emotions, value others’ perspectives and build resilience. Every child is supported to take part, and lessons are adapted when needed to make sure all pupils can access learning in a way that works for them.
The Jigsaw curriculum is taught through six progressive units across the year:
Being Me in My World – understanding identity and belonging
Celebrating Difference – promoting respect, diversity and anti-bullying
Dreams and Goals – setting aspirations and working towards them
Healthy Me – learning about physical and emotional wellbeing
Relationships – exploring positive connections and empathy
Changing Me – understanding growth, change and personal development
In the summer term, pupils take part in the Changing Me unit, which includes our statutory Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) content. Parents are invited to a meeting each year to view lesson materials and understand how these topics are taught, ensuring openness and trust between home and school. Where appropriate, lessons are delivered in smaller or single-gender groups to create a comfortable and respectful environment. Please see the PSHE Policy for further information.
PSHE extends beyond classroom lessons into daily school life. Assemblies, discussions and our use of Picture News help children think critically about current issues and how values such as respect, kindness and responsibility shape our actions.
Our aim is to give every child the knowledge, understanding and confidence to make informed choices and to thrive personally, socially and emotionally both within school and beyond it.
