Spirituality

As we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient but the things that are unseen are eternal.

- 2 Corinthians 4:18

Emerald Class project – Spirituality 2025

At St John’s, we see spirituality as something central to every child’s development. We understand spirituality as the connection between our inner selves, with God, and with everyone around us. It is something we feel but cannot touch, and it shapes the way we reflect, respond, and relate to the world.

Spirituality is not a single lesson or subject – it is woven throughout the life of the school. It is cultivated through our vision and values, our worship, our curriculum, our community links, and the way we encourage children to reflect on the big questions of life.

Our Approach

Look Up – We draw strength and guidance from the Bible, prayer, and Christian practices. These ground us in our beliefs and nurture our spirituality.

Look Down – We explore the world with wonder and appreciation, encouraging reflection on experiences. Children learn resilience, courage, and the ability to pause and think deeply.

Look All Around – We seek to understand the meaning and impact of our lives on others, fostering empathy, kindness, and a sense of belonging in a diverse world.

Why It Matters

We believe that cultivating a healthy spirituality helps children to:

  • Develop resilience and courage in the face of challenges.

  • Recognise their unique worth and the worth of others.

  • Reflect on life’s deeper questions with openness and curiosity.

  • Nurture compassion, respect and understanding within their community.

Spiritual development is part of our Christian ethos, but it is inclusive, welcoming all children and families regardless of background or belief. Every child at St John’s is encouraged to explore their inner life, their values, and their sense of purpose in a safe, supportive environment.
