Regular attendance is vital to ensure children make good progress, enjoy their learning and build strong friendships. At St John’s, we work closely with our Education Welfare Officer and families to promote good attendance and punctuality, so that every child can shine.
The school day begins promptly at 8:40am. Children arriving after this time should be brought to the main reception, where a parent or carer must inform office staff of the reason for lateness. Arriving on time helps children settle quickly and ensures they do not miss valuable learning.
If your child is unwell and unable to attend school, please telephone the school office on the first day of absence and let us know the reason. Please be specific, e.g. “sickness” or “high temperature.”
We ask that you call every day your child is absent, so we can keep registers accurate and support your child’s safe return to school.
Government legislation states that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.
There is no entitlement to term-time holidays.
Schools are in session for 38 weeks of the year, leaving 14 weeks for family holidays and activities.
Exceptional circumstances are considered on a case-by-case basis by the Headteacher.
If you would like to request leave of absence, please contact the school office in the first instance. A request form is available to download below.
